Fashion Faux Pas: Rubber Soles and Marble Floors

If there is anything that makes me cringe more than tapered trousers, it is rubber flip-flops out of season out of place. In a society where one is able to wear white after Labor Day, skip out on the dinner jackets, and wear sunglasses in a dimly lit room; it seems as though anything is acceptable. But with this turn for the casual comes a reemergence of classic courtesy. Slowly making its way from Europe, New York and lastly laid-back Los Angeles, there is a demand for cleaning up the dress code and putting grace back into style.
Coming from the tropics of South America to the islands of Japan, flip-flops have had a long history of being shoes of leisure. Meant to be worn on warm summer nights by the beach, in gym showers, or something you wear at a day spa. Nevertheless, in the past 10 years they have somehow ended up on the feet of the person sitting next to you while you’re sipping a glass of champagne at the Standard. Rubber flip-flops seem to have taken over brunch at the Polo Lounge, the marble clad floors of numerous evening soirees, and every other restaurant, store, bar, library, café… What ever happened to real shoes? It is time for a change and the civil duty of mankind to bring groomed feet and shoes back into L.A. style.
