UCLA Graduate Student Colloquium in Armenian Studies

By garib February 22, 2010, 12:36 am

On February 19, graduate students in various fields of Armenian study gathered at the renowned Royce Hall to share their expertise. Lecturers came from various parts of the world including the United States, Canada, Italy, Armenia and Turkey. This was not the first time UCLA had organized such an event, and each time this event takes place, attendees are illuminated with new research about Armenians.

Topics of discussion for this year’s event included Armeno-Turkish Literary Ties lectured by Mehmet Fatih Uslu (Turkey) and Alaettin Carikci (Turkey), Religious Themes and Practices in Armenian Culture lectured by Irene Tinti (Italy), Roubina Shnorhokian (Canada) and Anna Ohanjanyan (Armenia), Anthropological Perspectives on the Armenian Republic lectured by Konrad Siekierski (Armenia) and Alina Poghosyan (Armenia), Linguistics lectured by Hrayr Khanjian (USA), and Armenian Literary Issues lectured by Michael Pifer (USA), Aram Kouyoumdjian (USA) and Dr. Vahram Danielyan (Armenia). The guest speaker of the event was Art Historian, Dr. Ramela Abbamontian.

Present at the event were well known professors, Dr. Richard Hovannisian, Dr. Peter Cowe, Dr. Anahid Aramouni Keshiskian, professor Hagop Gulludjian, Dr. Levon Marashlian and Dr. Richard Dekmejian.

Armenia and Armenians have a very long history and to study its topics thoroughly will take a lot of time, knowledge, manpower. It is nice to see that there are students interested in various topics of Armenian history, language, literature, culture and politics, from various parts of the world, and not all of them belonging to the Armenian race.
